Chicago Area Reference

The Lyons Public Library maintains a special collection on Illinois History. This means whenever we see a book on Illinois, and especially the area close to Chicago and Lyons, we purchase it, as long as we stay within our book budget. Through the years we have developed a quite impressive collection. Patrons can come to the library and browse the collection or search through the library card catalog to find titles.

To supplement the book collection, the library also subscribes to journals from Illinois Historic
Preservation Agency, the Illinois State Historical Society and the Chicago Historical Society:

Chicago Historical Society Publishes:
    1. Chicago History
Illinois State Historical Society Publishes:
    1.  Dispatch/News
    2. Journal of Illinois State Historical
        Society
    3. Illinois Heritage

Historic Preservation Agency Publishes:
    1.  Historic Illinois
    2.  Illinois History
    3.  Illinois Preservation Series
    4.  Journal of Illinois History

The Local Newspaper Project:

The Lyons Public Library is going to start indexing the local newspaper so that one can find articles on local events easily and do local research. We will index names and obituaries which will be of interest to genealogists. Starting July 1999, we have the microfilm of the Suburban LIFE Citizen newspaper.

The library will also index previous years of local papers.  The Library either owns or has ordered the following microfilm:

  • Lyons Herald from the year 1893
  • Lyons Citizen. 1959-1969
  • Suburban LIFE Citizen 1999-Current

The library would also like to purchase 110 rolls of the Suburban LIFE Citizen for the years 1972-1998.  However, each microfilm roll costs $30.00 which is a total cost of $3,300.  The Library would appreciate donations from Village residents interested in this project. For each donation of $30.00, we will put your name on a microfilm roll.

The library has purchased a software product to use to index the papers. The software will be searchable by names, dates and subject. The staff have already entered a few years worth of obituaries and many months of article citations.
